Alphonse Gangitano murdered

The killing of Alphonse Gangitano is widely believed to have been the first in a series of retaliatory murders as factional gangsters in Melbourne’s underworld engaged in a deadly game of tit-for-tat between 1998 and 2010. Gangitano, a key figure in the Carlton Crew, was murdered at his home in Templestow, Melbourne. This started off a murder spree that claimed the lives of over 30 criminal figures and their partners, including the Moran crime family. Several reasons have been attributed to this prolonged turf war killings, including disputes over apparently soured drug deals and debts. The last to have been killed was a central figure in the Melbourne Gangland wars, convicted murderer and drug trafficker Carl Williams who was bashed to death in prison by a fellow inmate on April 2010 on suspicion of being an informer.
