This month marks the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, one of the most devastating and poignant events in American history.
Not a single person in the hustle and bustle of the New York commute that fateful morning would have had any idea that their country would be changed forever.
Here we recount how the main events of the day unfolded.
Los Angeles-bound American Airlines Flight 11, United Airlines Flight 175 and American Airlines Flight 77 all take off within the space of 20 minutes in the morning of September 11 2001.
They are hijacked shortly after, and although ground control is alerted, it is too late.
The North Tower
At 8:46 am, Flight 11 crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The initial reaction to the crash was that it was an accident, but the second crash that followed shortly would prove otherwise.
The South Tower
Flight 175 crashes into the South Tower, adding to the chaos and destruction that has already ensued on the streets below.
Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon at 9:37 am, killing both those on board the plane as well as in the buildings.
The U.S. government acted swiftly, eventually launching the War on Terror which continues to divide opinion even today.
Osama bin Laden’s reported assassination two years ago would appear to have put an end to the matter, but conspiracies still abound regarding the veracity of his death.
